Character Information
Name: Basilicum (Basil)
Canon: Katekyo Hitman Reborn
Age: 15
Canon Point: Chapter 379
History: Basil is a member of the Vongola's CEDEF ("Consulenza Esterna Della Famiglia," Italian for "External Advisors of the Family") and the apprentice of the boss, Iemitsu Sawada. His exact role in the CEDEF is unknown but he is shown to be trusted with the most important missions. Basil has sand blonde hair, blue eyes and speaks archaic Japanese, which was the result of a prank by Iemitsu, who purposely taught him wrong. He is the youngest of the seen CEDEF members. Basil's actual origin, outside of being of Italian descent, is unknown. What little that has been revealed is that Iemitsu basically raised him and acted as a father-figure. He is also an idol to Basil as he looks up to him greatly.

Personality: Basil might come across to people as a very odd teenager during first impressions when they first meet him due to his out dated way of speaking. This impression will not go away. However they will also realize that he is polite to a fault and rather formal with his use of suffixes.

Basil is very polite in his speech and mannerisms and, because of how he was taught Japanese, speaks very old fashioned and out dated: thee, thou, thy, etc. Basil uses the honorific of "-dono" to address most people, with the exception of Reborn who is addressed with "-san" and Iemitsu who he calls "oyakata-sama" which can be translated to "honorable lord [head-of-the-] house."

Basil is shown to be someone who is extremely loyal to a cause or person. This was demonstrated when he was trusted with the important mission to carry the Vongola rings and deliver them to the proper heir (Tsunayoshi Sawada) at the beginning of the Varia arc. There is a strong dedication to said missions, also, as Basil is not willing to give up and is willing to sacrifice himself for that mission. At the same time, he does not seem to a bare grudges against those that stand in his way, even if they hospitalize him badly. He is gentle, caring and willing to play with kids, seen when he was playing with Lambo and Ipin in chapter 359.

It is possible that Iemitsu and the other members of the CEDEF are sheltering him from the worst of their lifestyle, leaving Basil as light hearted as he is despite being deeply entrenched with the Mafia.

Basil sometimes “jumps the gun” and assumes the worst case scenario far too early. This flaw was shown when he was introduced in the story (beginning of the Varia arc). Basil was fighting Squalo (of the Varia) and he had assumed that Squalo already knew about Tsuna (who he was, what he looked like, etc). So, when he ran into Tsuna while fighting Squalo, he felt he had to get Tsuna away from Squalo, and subsequently gave away that Tsuna was important and the person who Xanxus and the Varia were going to fight for the tenth Vongola Boss’/Guardians’ positions.

Basil is accepting to the point that it doesn't bother him at all when he gets orders from in a book (http://reborn.wikia.com/wiki/Helper%27s_Book) he found near him after being dumped 10 years later into future, with no explanation, in a country he had not been in before. The fact that he had made it to Japan and to the Vongola’s hidden base from the middle of Europe with no allies and constantly hunted by hostile forces proves his dedication to a mission. It is suggested that his sleep and eating habits had been affected drastically as his body pretty much crashed during what was the very last leg of the journey—literally right outside of the entrance to the hidden base.

Basil is determined and wants to show his worth to those he feels are equal and above him, to earn their approval and respect, like when, in chapter 358, he requests to have a rematch with his friend Tsuna to see how strong Tsuna has become and how he measures against Tsuna. At no point, however, does Basil not think that Tsuna is a friend, despite wanting to fight him.

Basil has stated before, in the Future arc, that the Helper’s Book awakens his ‘inner samurai spirit’ whenever he reads it. This ‘Samurai Spirit’ is evident as another part of his personality: he’s very honorable. Basil hated it when in chapter 378 the Vindice mounted a dirty attack against the other teams during the Curse of the Rainbow arc by attacking the teams to destroy their watches while wearing none of their own. He was even more outraged when the Vindice attacked Nana (Iemitsu’s wife, Tsuna’s mother) when she has absolutely no known direct involvement in the Mafia as of chapter 379 (current chapter). The attack on Nana also brought out the end of Basil’s patience, something that hadn’t happened prior to this event in the manga. This shows that if someone went after someone Basil cared about he will anger and come after them.

Basil bit his lip and pulled the window open quickly (before he could talk himself out of this). After taking one more furtive glance around he slipped over the windowsill and into the deserted cabin.

Basil didn't know why he was doing this. Or, he actually did, but he wasn't very happy about it himself. He promised he would help his friends whenever they called on him. One friend asked him yesterday if he would play a trick on another friend, while he distracted everyone with a different prank.

Basil could accept the friendly rivalry easy enough. The only part he dislikes is that he has to break into his friend's cabin to set it up. 'It' was a complicated series of rope pulleys, which had to all remain unseen, that pulled the target into a dress. With frills.

The members of Aphrodite's cabin were going to either be cracking up at the image their cabin mate made or out for the blood of the one who did it.

Good thing Basil was well-liked, and his abrasive friend will have at least ten witnesses at any one time to keep him off the suspect list.

Shaking his head to get himself to focus and to stop putting the inevitable off for even longer (and risking himself or his distracting friend getting caught), Basil moved near a set of bunks, making sure he chose the correct one.

Basil scanned the area around the bunk. He wanted to pick the way to set this up that causes the least damage (to the victim, the furniture and those that would be standing nearby), works the smoothest and is least likely to get someone else instead. That would not be good. Or what Basil agreed to.

A decent-but-small chunk of time later had Basil happily eyeing his near unnoticable (if you didn't know it was there) work. After he started laying it down his spirits rose and he genuinely started to enjoy it. His admiring was cut short, however, when he started to hear angry talking getting nearer and nearer. The campers were coming back.

Smothering his panic before it got too much of a hold on him, Basil dashed for his entrance window (thankfully on the opposite side of the cabin from the door). He carefully easing the window closed after he cleared it in a flying leap and then skittered away to the campfire to tell his friend the deed was done.

As nice as putting up the prank was, he could have done without the nerve-wracking too close for comfort escape.
